On June 12, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the 'Nijut Moina' scheme, which will provide monthly stipends to girl students. This
initiative aims to prevent early marriages or Child marriages and encourage
girls to continue their education up to the postgraduate level.
Assam Chief Minister announced that girls enrolling in higher education will
receive monthly stipends from the state government which will be initiated
Under the 'Nijut Moina' scheme, girls studying in classes 11 and 12 will get
Rs 1000 per month, those pursuing undergraduate courses will receive Rs
1250, and postgraduate students will be given Rs 2500 each month.
The Assam Chief Minister briefly mentioned that the monthly stipends will be
transferred to the girls on the 11th of every month, which will help the
girl students to ease the financial burden on their families.
He confirmed that the government has approved the scheme and is committed to
supporting the education of girls.
CM Himanta emphasized that the 'Nijut Moina' scheme is likely to increase
the number of girls enrolling in higher education institutions. As he
pointed out that this new initiative contrasts with a previous scheme where
the government provided scooties to girls who achieved a first division in
their exams. That program successfully motivated more girls to aim for high
academic performance and get first division.
The Chief Minister also explained that the 'Nijut Moina' scheme is
expected to require an annual budget of approximately 300-350 crore
initially. However, as more students start to benefit from the stipends, the
annual cost could rise to around Rs 1500 crore. Despite the increasing
financial commitment, the government is dedicated to supporting the
education of girls and reducing the economic burden on their families.
