Assam Trading Scam Update
In a major development in the ongoing online trading fraud case, the
controversial Assamese actress and influencer Sumi Borah, along with her
husband Tarkik Borah and brother-in-law Amlan Borah, have been remanded to 13
days of judicial custody in connection with the multi-crore online trading
scam.
The couple’s initial 5-day police custody ended on Monday, and they were
presented before the Dibrugarh court on
Tuesday Sept 17. With no request for an extension from the
authorities, they were transferred to judicial custody that is Dibrugarh
Central Jail until September 30.
Earlier, there were reports that Sumi Borah was not cooperating with the
investigation, which led to speculation that the police might seek an extended
custody period. A senior police official commented, “Borah has been
uncooperative since her surrender and arrest. During interrogations, she has
either been crying or avoiding questions in various ways. Despite repeatedly
complaining of feeling unwell, medical checks have confirmed that she is
physically fit.”
Before surrendering, Sumi Borah shared a video last week in which she
expressed her reluctance to remain in police custody, stating she would rather
stay in jail. She also claimed that she hadn’t fled but had been hiding due to
misinformation being spread about her, which she said had caused her family a
great deal of distress.
Sumi Borah & Tarkik Borah Sent to 13 Days Judicial Custody
Sumi Borah is reported to be a key associate of Bishal Phukan, the mastermind
behind the massive trading scam that defrauded investors of nearly Rs 2,000
crore. Both Sumi and her husband, who recently surrendered to the police, have
been under intense interrogation regarding their ties to Phukan.
Meanwhile, Sumi’s brother-in-law, Amlan Borah, who was arrested in Bihar, was
also remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday. The scam, involving fraudulent
online trading investments and amounting to Rs 2,200 crore, was exposed after
the arrest of Bishal Phukan, the mastermind behind the scheme, at his
residence in Dibrugarh.
According to sources, Sumi Borah has revealed several high-profile individuals
during her questioning, including prominent lawyers and well-known figures
from the Assamese film industry, who are alleged to have invested in Phukan’s
fraudulent scheme.
The multi-crore scam, in which unsuspecting investors were cheated out of
their hard-earned money under the guise of online trading investments, began
to unravel after Bishal Phukan's arrest on September 2.
His connection to Sumi and Tarkik Borah was soon established, leading to a suo
moto case being lodged by the police. Sumi and Tarkik Borah were arrested on
September 12 after they voluntarily surrendered to the Dibrugarh Police, while
Amlan Borah was apprehended in Bihar on September 11 in connection with the
case. [no_toc]
